Why do gym clothes pill? Loose fibres on a fabric's surface can become tangled into small attached balls through rubbing during wear and laundering. These bobbles are called pills. How readily they form depends on the fibres, yarn, construction and finish, as well as use. Pilling is not automatically a sign that you washed the garment incorrectly.
Before reaching for a lint roller or fabric shaver, identify what you are looking at. Loose lint, attached pills and damaged fabric need different approaches.
Why do gym clothes pill in some places more than others?
Pills often appear where fabric repeatedly rubs against another surface. You might notice bobbles near an underarm, beneath a bag strap or where fabric touches fabric during movement.
The location can help you identify rubbing, but fabric construction also influences pilling. Two garments made from the same fibre can respond differently to similar use because their yarns, knit and finish differ.
Look for avoidable rubbing, such as an exposed hook-and-loop fastening brushing against a top or rough items mixed into the wash.

Check in good light without pulling at the surface. If you notice an unexpected change in one of our garments, take a clear photograph before attempting removal and get in touch with us.
How can you reduce avoidable rubbing in the wash?
Follow the garment's label first. Where machine washing is permitted, turn suitable pieces inside out and separate delicate workout fabrics from rough items such as denim. Keep exposed fastenings away from vulnerable surfaces, and avoid packing the drum so tightly that clothes cannot move freely.
Wash similar items together where their care requirements agree. A wash containing lint-shedding towels can leave loose fibres on other garments; that surface fluff should not automatically be treated as damage to the garment itself.
Use the detergent amount recommended for your load. More detergent does not remove established pills. Avoid adding fabric softener or other treatments when the garment instructions say not to use them.
For our Run Base Performance T-Shirt, wash inside out with similar colours and avoid fabric softener. Use the care instructions for each garment when sorting your laundry.
What should you do when drying gym clothes?
Use the method on the care label. If tumble drying is not permitted, do not use it to rush the garment back into your rotation. Where it is allowed, follow the stated settings rather than assuming every fabric can tolerate the same heat.
Give air-dried items enough space and time to dry completely before folding them away. Do not repeatedly rub damp fabric with a rough towel to speed things up.
For our Black Joggers, follow the washing and drying instructions on the garment's care label. Fleece joggers and lightweight training tops can have different care needs, so check each item before washing them together.
Can you remove pills without damaging the garment?
Sometimes, but the tool and fabric must be compatible. Removing a pill cuts or lifts surface fibres, so it can damage a thin, stretched or delicate area if handled aggressively.
Start with the garment clean, dry and laid flat. Check the tool's instructions and any garment guidance, then test an inconspicuous area. If both the fabric and tool instructions allow it, use a fabric shaver with a light touch and inspect the result before continuing.
Keep cutting tools away from seams, mesh, loose threads, prints and reflective details. Do not use a tool on the brushed interior of fleece unless it is specifically suitable for that surface. Stop if you see thinning, pulling or a change in texture.
Avoid pulling attached bobbles off with your fingers or using an exposed razor as a quick fix. If the garment already looks fragile, ask for advice rather than trying progressively harsher methods. Contact us if you have a question about one of our products.
When is it more than a cosmetic issue?
A few surface bobbles do not automatically mean a garment needs replacing. Check whether the fabric remains intact, the seams are sound and the garment still fits comfortably.
Holes, substantial thinning, broken seams or a waistband that no longer holds its shape deserve separate attention. De-pilling will not repair those issues. If you notice unusual deterioration in one of our garments, get in touch before attempting further treatment.
Include the product name, approximate purchase date, photographs and the care method you have used so we can understand your question.
Frequently asked questions
Does pilling mean gym clothes are poor quality?
Pilling alone is not a complete quality assessment. Fabric construction and finishing influence it, along with wear and laundering. Consider how quickly it appeared, how extensive it is and whether there is other damage.
Can cotton gym clothes pill?
Yes. Pilling is not limited to one fibre. The way fibres are made into yarn and fabric, the finish and the conditions of use all affect the result.
Will a lint roller remove pills?
It can lift loose surface lint, but attached pills may remain. Identify the problem first rather than repeatedly using stronger adhesive or pulling at the fabric.
Will washing inside out prevent all pilling?
No. It can reduce abrasion on the outer surface during washing, but it does not change the fabric's underlying tendency to pill or prevent rubbing during wear.
Can I use a fabric shaver on every gym garment?
No. Check suitability and test a small hidden area. Thin, damaged, mesh or decorated sections need particular care. Avoid using a cutting tool when the garment or tool instructions advise against it.
Will the pills return after removal?
They may. Removal changes the current surface appearance, not the underlying fabric construction. Continue following the care label and reducing avoidable abrasion.
